February 2019 newsletter

Dear Friends,

Two more courses are on offer in the last month of our Winter term. The first,

Critical Thinking in a Time of Confusion, 1st Tuesday of Feb, Mar, April, May (2/5,3/5,4/2,5/7, 7-9PM); 55 Clover Lane, Waterbury; $60; to register, call Sue (802) 244-7909

With our media now full of “fake news” and “alternate realities,” slippery slope arguments, red herrings, faulty analogies, scare tactics and “phishing,” how are we ever to determine what is true from what is false? This course, created by student requests, presents multiple techniques we can use to evaluate what we hear and see. In addition to multiple exercises, a variety of readings from current sources is provided to give participants hands-on practice in applying what we discuss. Created by Richmond Shreve and Sue Mehrtens; led by Sue Mehrtens. Students will have available a pdf of a book (in draft) that Richmond and I are creating.

is new and could not be more timely. I hope it will appeal to many of you.

The second is a course we haven’t offered in several years,

Mandala Workshop, Wednesdays, 2/13,20,27 & 3/6 (snow day 3/13); 55 Clover Lane, Waterbury; $60; to register, call Sue (802) 244-7909

A contemplative hands-on workshop designed to introduce participants to the powerful spiritual effect that results in the process of crafting a mandala. The various types of mandalas and cross-cultural use of mandalas will be explored, along with the alchemical operations associated with different mandala images. All the tools and media necessary to create mandalas will be provided. Prospective students are advised that, to maximize the benefits of this workshop, considerable time must be devoted to out-of-class homework consisting of creating or coloring an array of mandalas. Led by Sue Mehrtens

and it is organized to provide opportunities for participants both to make mandalas and to contemplate mandalas made anonymously by fellow students. As a contemplative program, it is well-suited to the introverted nature of Winter.

Our full list of Spring term courses will be posted c. February 15th.

Happy Snow!

Sue
